How Many Straps Do You Actually Need to Secure a Load?
Short answer: Two rules decide it, and you follow whichever gives you more straps. First, the count rule: a load over 10 ft needs at least 2 tie-downs plus 1 more for every additional 10 ft. Second, the 50% rule: the combined working load limit (WLL) of all your straps has to be at least half the weight of what you're hauling. Meet both, every time, on both sides of the border.
That's the whole game. Below is how it actually plays out on the deck — and why the part that wrecks the most shoulders isn't the math, it's the throwing.
The two rules that decide everything
Most drivers know they need "enough straps." Roadside inspectors know the exact number, and so should you. There are two separate requirements, and you always satisfy the higher one.
Rule 1 — The count: how many tie-downs, by length and weight
This one is set by the size of the article you're securing, not how you feel about it:

So a 24-ft piece of steel needs a minimum of four tie-downs before you even look at weight.
Rule 2 — The 50% rule: combined working load limit
Add up the working load limit (WLL) of every tie-down on the article. That total has to be at least half the weight of the load.
- A strap thrown over the top, anchored to the trailer on both sides, counts its full WLL.
- A strap running directly from the trailer to the load counts half its WLL.
- WLL is not break strength. Break strength is roughly three times the WLL — and only the WLL is legal. If the strap isn't marked, you have to use the default rating tables.
Worked example. You're hauling a 12-ft machine base weighing 8,000 lbs.
- Count rule: over 10 ft → 2 + 1 = 3 tie-downs minimum.
- 50% rule: half of 8,000 = 4,000 lbs of combined WLL needed. Three 4-inch winch straps thrown over the top clear that easily.
- You use 3 straps — the length rule is what drives the number here.
The takeaway: on long loads, the count rule usually wins and you're throwing three, four, five straps or more. That's a lot of trips over the top of the freight.
The checks you can't skip
The straps are only half of a passed inspection. You also have to:
- Re-check within the first 50 miles, then again every 150 miles or 3 hours (whichever comes first), or any time your duty status changes. Vibration and load settling loosen straps — this catches it.
- Use edge protection anywhere a strap crosses a sharp edge. A single hard brake can shear an unprotected strap on a steel corner.
- Keep every tie-down taut and make sure each one is marked with its WLL.
US and Canada: same math, different rulebook
If you run cross-border, here's the part that saves you a headache: the numbers are identical. Both countries built their rules on the same North American Cargo Securement Standard.
- United States — FMCSA, 49 CFR Part 393. Everything above, in imperial.
- Canada — National Safety Code (NSC) Standard 10, adopted province by province. In Québec it's the Règlement sur les normes d'arrimage, enforced by Contrôle routier Québec (SAAQ).
What changes is the units, not the logic: 5 ft reads as 1.52 m, 1,100 lbs as 500 kg, 10 ft as 3.04 m, the 50-mile check as 80 km, and the 150-mile check as 240 km. Same 50% combined-WLL rule. Same required re-checks. Cross the line and your straps are still legal — just make sure your load count matches the metric thresholds on the paperwork.
